The UK’s health regulator has approved the first oral fluconazole treatment for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which is now available on prescription to help manage symptoms.

Dr Laura Squire, a consultant urology specialist, said: “The drug is an effective option for women diagnosed with PCOS who are trying to reduce their risk of ovarian cancer and who are at a higher risk of developing ovarian cysts, such as high levels of potassium and magnesium.”

The drug is being sold under the brand name Diflucan and is designed to help women who are diagnosed with PCOS who are at a higher risk of developing ovarian cysts.

The drug is being approved for use in women who are diagnosed with PCOS, or if there are certain risk factors for developing ovarian cysts.

The drug is available to help women who are diagnosed with PCOS and are at a higher risk of developing ovarian cysts, including those with high levels of potassium and magnesium. It is also available as a vaginal cream or suppository.

Dr Squire added: “Diflucan works by inhibiting the growth of certain types of bacteria in the body, which can lead to an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.”

The drug is also used to treat symptoms associated with anovulation (ovulation of the fallopian tubes, ovaries and fallopian tubes, also called endometriosis), and to treat symptoms associated with endometrial hyperplasia (an abnormal growth of the lining of the womb).

Diflucan is not a cure for these symptoms and can be used to treat them in some cases.

The drug is also used to treat symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition in which ovaries become enlarged and can cause irregular menstrual periods.

Women who are not ovulating regularly can be prescribed the drug. This is available by prescription only, for a total of 50mg tablets of the drug.

“The drug is useful for women who have ovulation disorders, but who do not ovulate regularly and are not producing eggs regularly. It is also effective in women who do ovulate regularly and are using a fertility medication,” said Dr Squire.

The drug is available on the NHS, but the NHS prescription is only for a total of 50mg tablets.

The drug is not approved by the European Medicines Agency to treat infertility.

The drug is also used to treat symptoms associated with endometrial hyperplasia (a growth of the lining of the womb), and for the treatment of symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome.

Diflucan has been licensed for use in women with PCOS. It is available on the NHS, but the NHS prescription is only for a total of 50mg tablets.

The drug was first approved for use by the UK’s National Institute for Clinical Communications (NIC) in September 2012.

In July 2013, the NHS prescription was added to the National List of Essential Medicines to prevent serious infections.

Dr Squire said: “The NHS prescription for Diflucan is only available to women who have symptoms of PCOS, but who do not ovulate regularly. It is also effective in some cases of endometriosis, but is not available as a daily medication.”

Dr Squire added: “Diflucan should not be used in women who are diagnosed with endometriosis.

“Diflucan is not a treatment for endometriosis and should not be used in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

“The use of Diflucan in women with PCOS is not recommended.”

The drug is also not approved by the European Medicines Agency to treat infertility in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

The drug is not approved for use in women with ovulation disorders and is not recommended for use in women who have not been diagnosed with PCOS.

Dr Squire said: “Women with PCOS are at an increased risk of ovarian cancer and at high risk of developing ovarian cysts, including high levels of potassium and magnesium. This is an important finding in women who are at a higher risk of developing ovarian cysts, such as those with high levels of potassium and magnesium.

About fluconazole

What does it do?

Thrush is a fungal infection, commonly caused by a type of yeast called candida. Although candida is naturally present in the body, an imbalance can trigger thrush symptoms. Fluconazole 150mg (also known as Diflucan and other brand names) kills certain types of fungi and restores your body's natural balance.

Taking fluconazole for the first time

Fluconazole treatment for thrush is simple - just one capsule to be swallowed with a glass of water. You can take this medicine at any time of day, with or without a meal.

How effective is it?

Women taking fluconazole should see an improvement within a few days. Some women will notice improvement in 24 hours.

For men, the condition can take a little longer to clear up. The symptoms should clear up within a few days, although this can take up to a week.

If your condition hasn't cleared up within one week, you should consult a doctor.

Cautions when using fluconazole

Thrush is an infection which can occur without sexual contact, so it is not a sexually transmitted disease. However, the infection can be passed on during sex, so it is recommended that you should not have sex until the infection has cleared up.

If you regularly suffer from thrush, then it's advisable that both you and your partner have thrush treatment at the same time.

Taking too much can make you unwell, so contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately if you take more than you should.

Side effects of fluconazole

As with any medicine, there are side effects. Although a serious allergic reaction to fluconazole is rare. Common side effects (occurring in one in ten patients) include nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, wind, rash and headache. However, these side effects are usually mild and don't tend to last long. If symptoms persist, or are particularly severe, contact your doctor.

A full list of side effects is available in the manufacturer's.

When not to take fluconazole

Tell your doctor before taking fluconazole if:

  • Have liver or kidney problems.
  • Suffer from heart disease, including heart rhythm problems.
  • Have abnormal levels of potassium, calcium, or magnesium in your blood.

Tell your doctor about any other medicines you are taking, or have recently taken before taking fluconazole.
